JoAnne Yates has studied communication and information processes, uses, and technologies both historically (e.g., Control through Communication and Structuring the Information Age) and in recent times (work with Wanda Orlikowski on genre evolution in electronic communication). Her most recent historical book, coauthored with Craig N. Murphy, is Engineering Rules: Global Standard Setting since 1880 (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019).
